Working as an oDesk freelancer

Today I am going to share my oDesk experience with you. I will be actually talking about how you can generate some residual income from oDesk. So basically this article is about making money online. But I don’t want to mislead anyone to think that I am going to talk about some get rich quick money methods. It’s not too good to be true and it actually worked for me. It’s an easy way to make some cash on the side. But it’s not much compared to what you can make with affiliate marketing. However, I did enjoy the whole thing – working with my oDesk clients, sharing with them the knowledge that I acquired from my blogging and affiliate marketing experience. Probably that’s why I am so excited to share this with you. So let’s get down to it.

How I got started

I started my online career as a blogger and affiliate marketer. I developed quite a few niche websites to sell my affiliate products. I used WordPress to build all of my niche websites because I heard that WordPress sites are easy to handle. In the beginning I used WordPress default themes for all of my sites. But later one of my friends suggested me to use premium themes for my sites/blogs because premium themes have more options, security features etc.

Premium theme providers also update their themes on a regular basis and provide quality support. After browsing through different premium theme websites, I decided to use Genesis framework and its child themes on my blogs. Since I had quite a few blogs I bought extended license of the Genesis framework and all of its child themes. The child themes came as a package and that way I could save some money as well.

I installed the themes on my blogs and began to play with them. I started to learn tweaking the CSS of the themes, adding new widget areas, registering new functions etc. Within a couple of months I became a Genesis child theme tweaking expert! And then the oDesk idea came to my mind. I was already using oDesk to hire workers like virtual assistant, data entry worker etc. I liked it a lot better than the other ones available out there. Now I began to start working there as a freelancer as well.

What is oDesk?

oDesk is something like “a staffing website”. If you are looking to hire someone, you can just visit oDesk.com and hire a freelancer from all around the world. You can hire someone locally or globally at great prices. You can find all types of workers on oDesk starting from semi-skilled people like cheap data entry worker to more specialized people like programmer, designer, writer etc.

Working as an oDesk freelancer

I created my freelancer profile on oDesk and started to look for WordPress related jobs. To my amusement, I found that people were actually specifically looking for Genesis framework expert as well! I bid on few Genesis related jobs and got hired within a few days. That’s how I started to build and design websites/blogs for other people and earn money. I was really enjoying it because tweaking Genesis child themes was not new to me,oDesk also allowed me to use my oDesk earnings to pay my oDesk contractors. I have also become an oDesk verified web developer in recognition of my quality performance an services.

I have just shared my experience here in order to inspire those people who know how to set up a blog with WordPress and tweak the design of a WordPress theme. I know there are many bloggers/marketers out there who know how to do this. WordPress skill is something that you can sell in the outsourcing market. So I highly recommend to give it a shot if you are good at tweaking CMS based websites or plain HTML/CSS.
