Travel Tips and Tricks

Travel Tips and TricksA successful round of travel generally means getting there and coming back with your person and most of your belongings. (Accept that you’re going to lose something while you travel.) While there is no one secret to successful travel, there are some tips and tricks you can use to boost your odds of a successful trip.

Leave the iPhone Home

While consumer electronics aren’t necessarily cheap in the US, they can be worth more in other countries…a lot more. The average cost for consumer electronics, such as iPhones, is almost twice as much in Brazil. In short, that makes your high-end electronics a prime target for theft there and anywhere else that high tariffs and taxes drive up the prices of tech gear.
Inform Your Credit Card Company
As cyber crime has grown into a multi-billion dollar industry that operates largely abroad, credit card companies have become understandably paranoid about charges that deviate from the norm. Call your credit card company and let them know you’re planning on traveling out of the country or you might find them declining that impulse buy in Switzerland.
Break In Those Shoes
That hiking trip you’ve planned is not the time to break in a new pair of hiking boots. In fact, new articles of clothing and footwear are generally a bad idea for any trip. They might not fit right, could be uncomfortable, or may not hold up as well to the weather as you imagined in that temperature controlled store where you bought them.
Forget That Pants Have Back Pockets
Putting anything in your back pocket while traveling is a little like inviting thieves to take something from you. Experienced pickpockets can snap something from a back pocket without you ever feeling a thing. Front pockets are better and a money belt that goes around your leg is the best.
Always Assume Authority Figures Lack a Sense of Humor
Authority figures such as customs agents, airport security, border guards and police work under constant stress. While they probably enjoy a good laugh as much as the next person, you have no idea what’s going to strike them funny or make them haul you off for an impromptu cavity search. If you want them to like you, make their lives easier by being polite and following the rules. The less time they need to spend on you, the happier everyone will be.
Travel should be something you remember for all the fun you had, not all the PTSD it left you with. By using these tips and tricks, you’re heading for the good memories and not the bad experience.
