Guidelines for conducting an interview

Guidelines for conducting an interviewAn interview is one of the best ways to analyze the skills and abilities of a person. This is also a chance for the interviewer to know about the candidate and see if he matches the requirements of the job. Interviewer has to ask the relevant questions so that the ideal candidate for the job can be selected.

You may have a lot of experience in conducting interviews but it always better to do some basic preparation.  The most important thing here is to make the candidate or the interviewee comfortable enough to give his best shot. If the whole atmosphere is too intimidating, there will be a good chance of eliminating deserving candidates as they will not be able to perform well.

Now what are the things you should take into consideration or in other words what are the guidelines for conducting an interview.  There are no hard and fast rules to this as the interview process can be different in various positions and industries. But there are some basics which apply to almost any interview.

First of all, the place where the interview is going to take place should be quiet enough so that a good communication can take place. Make sure that there are no disturbances around. If there is any special format which has to be followed, the interviewee should be aware of it. You should also have all the required information in advance.

When you talk about the questions which are to be asked, they should be easy to understand and uncomplicated. Neutral questions are generally the best ones where a candidate can start with a simple yes or no. Observing the body language of the candidate is an important part of the interview process. Give him enough time to finish whatever he wants to say about a particular topic. Then you can go on to behavioral, competency based questions and general questions.

As an interviewer, it is very important to know about the skills and experience of a candidate and you should be able to match these attributes with the job profile. Apart from that, you have to be careful in asking personal questions.

They should not be discriminatory in any way. Conducting interviews is also a skill and as you get more experience in it, you will get better at it. Every industry has some specific things which need to be taken into consideration. Same way interview for managers or senior level executives will be very different than interview for freshers or beginners.
